Shale Gas Drilling and Habitat Fragmentation

Much of the concern which has been expressed about the impacts of shale gas extraction by high-volume, horizontal hydrofracking (HVHF) has been directed to environmental issues such as water resources and water contamination, air quality degradation, potential effects on public health and safety, traffic congestion and damage to rural roads.
Perhaps less attention has been directed to the potential effects on protected and endangered plant and animal life.  In the extensive revised Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement (SGEIS) released in September, 2011, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) does address some of these problems.  This document can be read online at the DEC website.  I draw your attention to Chapter 6.4, Page 6-66. HERE IS THE LINK.

http://www.dec.ny.gov/data/dmn/rdsgeisfull0911.pdf

The DEC notes that the roads, drillings pads, pipeline, and other facilities like compressor stations will cause habitat fragmentation.  “… significant adverse impacts to habitats, wildlife and biodiversity from site disturbance associated with HVHF in the area underlain by the Marcellus Shale in New York will be unavoidable.  In particular, the most significant potential wildlife impact associated with HVHF is fragmentation of rare interior forest and grassland habitat.”
Impacts which will be more obvious to the human population but may also affect  other species include road mortality, degradation of water quality in streams and rivers, artificial night lighting and noise, and introduction of non-native species by equipment and truck traffic.
Some of these impacts may be able to be mitigated by environmental regulation and monitoring.  This is less likely to be the case with habitat fragmentation because of the nature of this industrial activity.
